Chapter 8

Edward John Kurishingal was married to Josephine Louis Philip. Edward was in the army and retired as a major. Josephine was a devout wife and homemaker. Two years into their marriage, they were blessed with a daughter Rebecca. She became a doctor, got married to a fellow professional and both were now settled in Chicago.

When Rebecca was four, Edward and Josephine were blessed with another child, a boy. They named him Job, after the biblical saint. He was an adventurous fellow, full of energy and enthusiasm. His father saw an athletic streak in him and trained him accordingly, and wanted his son to tread his path and join the army.

When his friends played, his father trained him in close quarters combat. When normal children slept, his father woke him up at four in the morning and made him swim, in a cold pool. Job rebelled. His mother shared in his anxiety but the proud father replied, “He was born to be an officer. I know it’s hard. It’s nothing compared to the training he will be put through in the army. And this will ensure he’s a couple of notches ahead of the rest.”

It proved to be true but wasn’t in the army. It was commando training for select IPS cadets, where he befriended Siddharth and Kishore. It wasn’t that he was disqualified for the NDA. But destiny had other plans for him. A major turning point, individualistic or nationalistic, a tragedy would precede it.

For Job, it was the untimely death of his cousin and confidant, Katherine. He liked her more than his own sister, he considered her another sibling. She was an only child and hence the feeling was mutual. She knew his fears, his feelings, his ambitions and his apprehensions. He even shared the first crush he felt towards a fellow student with her. Her death was a serious shock to him. Her beauty proved to be her curse. She was on her way home, after the Sunday mass. It was his fifteenth birthday and he had accompanied her to church. Midway through, a van slowed down beside them and pulled her in. Job ran after the van, even reaching its side and banging on the door. The window slid open and he was shoved aside. He fell sideward but he had the presence of mind to note down the number.

A police report was filed but even after an extensive search of the town, she remained missing. Alerts were passed to all stations across the state. Since the family was a wealthy one, the police waited for a ransom call, but it never came. Three days later, her defiled remains were found by the roadside. It was the most traumatic period of his life, but Job never cried. Once the funeral was over and life slowly limped back to normal, his father was careful about their training sessions. But Job had changed. He was up early, pushing himself to the limits with a focus and determination his father had never seen before.
